Disabling Spell-Based Bunny Hopping to Improve Player Experience
Remove Bunny Hopping,
I have been around since the 2009 launch and have lived through the highs and lows of being both a new player and a veteran. At this point, I feel like I am something else entirely, someone who loves the game enough to be honest about what is hurting it.
My suggestion is simple, but I believe it is critical: remove bunny hopping through spells like Begone, Stormblast, Launch, and similar mechanics.
Please stop for a moment and really think about Darkfall as a whole. Think about the new player experience and the long term health of the game alongside the veteran experience. Right now, a skilled veteran can realistically fight and escape against ten newer or moderately experienced players. That might feel good for the veteran, and I say this as one myself, but it is not healthy for the game.
Veteran players, myself included, have been abusing mechanics since the beginning. Many of these mechanics started as bugs that were never corrected, and over time they became expected behavior. We learned them, mastered them, and now defend them. But that does not mean they are good design.
New players should feel safer inside their own cities. Right now, they are not. They simply wait for the day a veteran jumps the wall and toys with them using movement spells that add nothing meaningful to strategy or immersion. These mechanics actively undermine the purpose of city defenses.
Some of the best moments in Darkfall history were at the beginning, before people understood how to exploit bunny hopping. Sieges mattered. Getting over a wall took effort. You had to break in. Defenders on the wall had real value and real safety, and holding a position meant something.
With the current spell based movement, the entire point of owning a holding has been stripped away. Walls no longer provide safety. Verticality no longer matters. If there is no protection, then why even build walls at all. What purpose do holdings serve when anyone can ignore them?
Combat in Darkfall is already extremely fast for most players. I would say for at least eighty percent of the population, it is overwhelming. When you layer bunny hopping on top of that speed, you create a skill ceiling that most people will never reach. If most players cannot realistically compete, they will not stay. Without them, there is no healthy player base and no sustainable future for the game.
I love Darkfall. I genuinely do. Bunny hopping is fun. I use it every day to escape situations I probably should not survive. I am not pretending otherwise. But I want this game to be for more people, not only veterans, not only players who can play constantly. I want new players, archers, tanks, and slower paced fighters to enjoy the game while moving at a normal, readable speed.
There are many issues with combat, but this is the biggest one. It keeps veterans comfortable while driving new players away. Both groups need to coexist for Darkfall to survive.
At the end of the day, we do not need to win every fight. We should not. Anyone who insists these mechanics must stay is prioritizing their ability to dominate newer players over the health of the game.
