Long time splitgate player and streamers here.
I think the problem Splitgate has, just like Team Fortress Classic, Quake, CS, old arena shooters etc, is the general approchability of the game from the casual audience's perspective. Yes, high skill ceiling games are great, it's what I've been playing for 25 years... but like Starcraft 2, the casual audience is what will drive the success long-term. You need a low barrier to entry.
The game is great, but you CANNOT have features in the game like loadouts that scale with experience. You already have people who are coming from SG1 who can triple portal flank kill 3 people. They have added tools now to be able to AOE stun and whatnot as well. The problem comes when you have a new player who needs to UNLOCK all of the perks while also being behind from an experience standpoint. They will have such an uphill battle when it comes to getting into the game and enjoying it or feeling like they're doing well.
Games like Fortnite are successful because the first few times playing the game are actual bot lobbies to get people to feel like they're good at the game. In SG2, they are going to be met with the great filter that already exists in portaling, and on top of that we've given more tools to players who've already been playing for a while.
Really excited to see what gets done with the game. The battle royale doesn't bother me at all, because it's only a portion of the game. Arenas are still a thing, so anyone complaining about SG not being innovative because of that are missing half of what this game is.
