Implement Cooldown on Portal Usage to Reduce Spam and Enhance Gameplay
Open
I would really like for 1047 to take another look at portal spam.
From a reddit thread:
Person A.
I really hope they fix the portal spam because it's a genuine problem, especially on smaller maps since people can basically spawn trap you while they rotate around the map in just a few seconds. If they had portaling like in the BR (you have a set reserve of portals you can place that slowly fills up over time and has a small cap) then it would be significantly more fun. Ranked is filled with this and it ruins the fun of the game completely.
Person B: They did a playtest like this, and decided not to move forward with the mechanic. It seems like the design philosophy really does boil down to being a halo knockoff with portals and no further balance
Me: I would love for them to do another test with a CD on the portals like above. Even if it’s an experimental mode. I feel like that style would appeal to casuals much much more. My buddies who are not as into SG constantly say how that would improve the experience more and reduce that massive skill gap a little.
Would add some depth of risk reward of portaling and cd management too. I would love to hear more of why they decided going a different direction than above. Having no CD on portals is what makes it a gimmick imo, with a CD added it becomes an actual mechanic.
Person B: I'd say the opposite, it's a gimmick if you can do it a few times. It's a mechanic when the gameplay revolves around it, which is the entire point of the game. Moving away from that and targeting casual players, who will never stick around anyway, was why the first release crashed so hard.
Me: Portals can still be the front seat of the game without spammability. To me it’s like what if grenades had no cd and were spammable? What if you had infinite jetpack? Unlimited ammo? All of those things actively hurt the game by taking out real decision making and problem solving dynamics.
What other game has a powerful ability that has no CD and is completely spammable? There are non because thats just not good design.
I hate to break it to you but without casuals no game can succeed. Currently this game has almost no chance to bring in an active casual audience imo.
Look at other games like CoD, Arc Raiders, ect They all massively appeal to a casual audience. Those games are pretty easy to jump into, understand, do relatively okay and feel mostly fair. Which I think SGAR kind of misses. I think we are getting closer but still not quite there.
Like I said I would just like another playtest or mode to test it and get actual feedback. I can bet almost most if not all casuals did not play any playtest previously. I could be totally wrong.
Just to be clear I do want this game to succeed and play several times a week. I bought founders packs, both bp’s, cosmetics. It’s just my interpretation of the writing on the wall outside of the lack of marketing and the damaged social perception.
