Enhance In-Game Chat System for Improved Player Communication and Experience

Hello, neighbors and IW!

There is a small but annoying issue in Neighbors: Suburban Warfare that many players know about and talk about, but it doesn't get discussed often enough within the community. And that issue is the chat system. It's simply terrible, and here's why:

  1. The chat cannot be scrolled.
You can't scroll it with the mouse wheel, keyboard arrow keys, or even use a scrollbar. There should be a proper scroll bar that players can drag up and down with the mouse.

  2. The in-game chat has no background.
In the lobby, the chat has a semi-transparent black background, making it easy to read. During matches, however, there is no background at all. This makes the chat especially difficult to read on snowy maps because of the white and blue colors used in the UI.

  3. There are no tabs for switching between Team Chat and Global Chat.
While it is possible to switch chats using a keybind, new players may not even know that a team chat exists. I believe there should be two visible tabs: "Global Chat" and "Team Chat", allowing players to switch between them with a mouse click. The currently selected tab should be highlighted. Keyboard shortcuts should still work as well.

  4. Messages have no timestamps.
There is no indication of when a message was sent.

  5. There is no clear distinction between teammates and enemies in the chat.
For example, player names could be displayed with tags such as [Teammate] Nickname and [Enemy] Nickname.

  6. All player names use the same color.
I think it would make more sense if each player received a unique bright color when a match starts. This would make players easier to identify, especially when someone has a difficult-to-read name or uses another language. Players could even refer to each other by color if needed.

  7. The chat lacks a unified font, outlines, shadows, and overall visual design.
There is no consistent signature font across different languages, and the text lacks proper outlines, shadows, or any visually appealing styling.

  8. There is no censorship or moderation filter whatsoever.
Even a light profanity filter for insults and other offensive language would be better than having no filtering at all.

I hope the developers will consider improving the chat system in the future, as it is an important part of communication and overall player experience.
