Engineer Class: Introduce LMGs or SAW Category for Enhanced Infantry Support
I suggest expanding the Engineer class's weapon selection to include LMGs or a dedicated SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon) category. This would give the class more depth while better representing the role of engineers and mechanized infantry in a modern battlefield.
Engineer currently has limited options for engaging enemies at medium and long range, relying primarily on SMGs and shotguns outside of sidearms. Giving the class access to LMGs or SAWs would provide a way to engage at greater distances while allowing engineers to support their teammates with sustained suppressive fire.
In real-world mechanized infantry, SAWs and other machine guns provide squad-level fire support, helping suppress enemy positions and allowing fellow infantry to maneuver. Forefront's Engineer class already has a strong connection to vehicle support, but expanding its infantry support capabilities would make it feel more complete. Engineers could support friendly infantry advancing through exposed areas, hold lanes, and provide sustained fire against enemy positions instead of being limited primarily to close-range engagements.
There are several weapons that could fit this role. The FN Minimi and FN Minimi Para offer examples of compact, belt-fed squad automatic weapons, while the RPK-74 provides an example of a magazine-fed automatic weapon designed around an infantry rifle platform. The HK MG4 is another example of a dedicated light machine gun that could fit a squad-support role.
This would also complement Engineer's ammunition limitations. Engineer is the only class that cannot independently replenish its ammunition through its own equipment or abilities. LMGs and SAWs generally offer substantial ammunition capacity, making them a natural fit for a class intended to support both infantry and vehicles. Access to these weapons would give Engineer more ammunition to work with during sustained engagements, although the exact ammunition capacity could depend on the weapon.
Overall, giving Engineer access to LMGs or introducing a dedicated SAW category would expand the class's identity, provide more meaningful weapon variety, and better reflect the infantry-support responsibilities associated with mechanized forces. It would allow Engineer to contribute not only through vehicle support, but also through sustained infantry fire support and battlefield area control.
