I think that‘s the super hard adjustments in the Art of Level-Design. A hardcore survival experience can‘t guide you 24/7 but if it ends often in dieing, what always is the worst possible outcome, players get frustrated. Me as a Hardcore Survival Lover, would feel a clean Map of the Save-Zones as ruining the survival experience. Maybe it could have more hints in the lore and the radio calls what you should do to survive. But to many clean maps make the experience less organic and less intense. - just my brainstorm thoughts more out the view of the tricky part of Level-Design.

The same dificult fine line in adjustment is probably all over the Hardness and ammount of unknown things of the map. I think as a Map creator you want to catch peoples joy from the first day. But the same time you want to make it still hard and new stuff to explore and find out after many weeks playing the map. It‘s not good if you figured out everything at day two playing it. But also here is the difficult in not make players too frustrated to lose them after a weak. - compared to Namalsk back then and Deerisle, how endless times player died till they found out how the stuff works. - but I think a new more unknown map has the problem that it first has to proof it self as worthy to be brutal, to get accepted by players to be worthy to die many many times to find out what‘s behind. I can‘t explain clean but have kind of a feeling that there is a paychological balance behind how exited the community is, how known and wide accepted a map is and the level of how much a map is allowed to punish the players and how much it is allowed to make them accepting suffering on it. - As I build a map by myself I started to learn a lot about the psychological part of Level Design and how unclear it is how to do it right. So far I think Azalea is on a very good way to habe it‘s own unique part in a harsher survival map. But feedbacks like yours are very helpfull to keep adjusting the difficult details.
(All I write are just my own thoughts out of some feelings about what I saw and experienced. Even I explain them most possible precise I never mean that I‘m right.)

A perimeter of custom asset signs stating 'Volcanic activity ahead' or something would do the job. Similar to the Sonar Zone.
