I think you need 200 gems to unlock a pack. You can either purchase gems on Discord for desktop or collect the free gems that are available every few hours. (unknown user mentioned)

I've already tried this. decided to unlock the 2nd killer pack, completed it, and nothing changed.

But what do you mean “nothing changed?” You have to spend gems to unlock each pack individually.

Some packs are indeed free, I believe the first packs, and then other ones require gems
